is still reeling socially and economically from the twelve years of civil war that racked the country from 1980 to 1992. A war as traumatic as the one endured by
El Salvador leaves scars, and its lingering effects change the way of live for many people for generations. However, on the other hand, it is also true that since
the civil wars end, some improvements have been made in the lives of ordinary citizens (Swedish). Illiteracy has fallen from 30 percent of the population to 17 percent and infant
morality has dropped from 41 to 35 deaths for every 1,000 live births (Swedish). However, William Pleitez of the United National Development Program (UNDP) notes that while progress has been
made on some fronts, the problems remaining in El Salvador are enormous (Swedish). Chief among these concerns is poverty. There is a deep divide in the level of wealth in
the country. The elite live quite comfortably, benefiting from new global trade considerations, but the devastating effects of the war linger for the common people. The Salvadoran government, according
to the Bush administration, is a model for development and exemplifies the success of free trade policies (Swedish). The government has slashed the public sector, privatized state-owned utilities and lowered
barriers to foreign investment. In the process, tens of thousands of workers have been laid off, exacerbating the problems of entrenched poverty. However, entrenched poverty is not the only
business held over from the countrys protracted civil war, as Salvadorans continue to live with a high level of violence (Swedish). Criminal violence causes more of the population to live
