a solid reputation in the field, but who challenges some of Menendez Pedals work on the grounds that because he lived in very turbulent times (the early 20th century), he
wanted to give Spaniards a hero who belonged exclusively to them; this would give them a role model and someone to emulate. (We have to remember that Franco, fascism and
the Second World War, as well as the Spanish Civil War, were all bearing down on Men?ndez Pidal. However, Fletcher argues that Men?ndez Pedals patriotism may have overshadowed his scholarship.
