A&P addresses a very fundamental instinct of every human being: individualism. That this quest for uniqueness asserts itself in every aspect of ones existence is paramount to the extent of prosocial behavior an individual like Sammy might demonstrate. He is no less a hero for wanting the girls to notice him; in fact, this desirous behavior actually makes him that much more of a hero in the ordinary persons mind. Updikes approach to Sammys character helps to define his heroism, even when somewhat unadmirable traits are included. It is here that the student will compare Sammys character to the doctor in Godfather Death. The exposition is most certainly the very first line of Updikes story, which immediately alerts the reader that this tale will be one involving a young mans emotional issues with the opposite sex. The carefully detailed portrait of Queenie, the leader of the three girls, is meant to illustrate the dichotomy between and among all the interwoven traits attributed to a girl of her age. On the one hand, she attempts to reach beyond her years by the things she says and does but on the other, she is nothing more than a budding adolescent still learning about life. Despite her shortcomings, she represents the epitome of female-ness in Sammys eyes.
