this type of egocentrism is maladaptive or whether it is a normal part of the maturation process is at the center of recent debates, and can be linked to views
of egotism and a level of self-interest that has led to increasing emotional instability in adolescent populations. The level of self-interest in adolescent behaviors varies significantly from child to child.
It is not uncommon, for example, for only children to demonstrate a higher than normal degree of personal self-interest, which may in fact last longer than the self-interest demonstrated
by others. But whether this level of self-interest is maladaptive or not is determined by the impacts of this self-interest and whether individuals are able to see past their
egocentrism or if it determines negative decision-making and risk-taking behaviors. Psychological Egoism Psychological egoism seeks to provide a view of human nature and of human actions as being
centered in choices being made for the individuals own best interests. There is no altruism, no particular action originating from the motivation that a thing is merely the right
thing to do. "In its strong form the theory asserts that people always act in their own interests, even though they may disguise their motivation with references to helping
others or doing their duty" (Mosely, 2001). In considering whether adolescent behaviors and egocentrism is maladaptive, it is valuable to consider the views of psychological egoists and understand their
