relationship between Will and Sean. This paper discusses the film and the relationship from the perspective of psychological understanding and the main characters ego functions. Good Will Hunting The film Good Will Hunting is the story of a young man, Will Hunting (Matt Damon), who "immerses himself in books, drinking and friends to escape his anger and frustration stemming largely from his past experiences with abusive foster families" (Good Will Hunting, 2006). Late in the film we see a photo of Wills body, covered in bruises; the body is not that of a child but a young man, so the abuse is recent. We find out that Wills foster father gets drunk and beats him with a belt. The combination of his being orphaned and abused by foster care couples has made him violent, manipulative and a liar, but its all an act to cover the fact that hes terrified and even worse, believes that he deserved the abuse. It is the climax of the film when Sean tells Will repeatedly "Its not your fault," until Will believes him and starts to cry. The main plot device is simple: Will is arrested after a fight and hits a cop; in order to avoid jail time Prof. Lambeau makes a deal with the judge that hell have Will work on advanced mathematics with him, and additionally, see a therapist (Good Will Hunting, 2006). Will agrees and does very well in math, but hates the idea of therapy and succeeds in chasing off several therapists, including an unnamed character played by George Plimpton in a cameo. Finally, Lambeau arranges for Will to talk to Sean Maguire (Robin Williams), a psychologist, who is teaching at a community college (Good Will Hunting, 2006).
