This is the premise of Neal Stephensons innovative 1992 futuristic novel, Snow Crash, which is a late-twentieth century variation of Aldous Huxleys post-World War II classic, Brave New World.
Once upon a time, people had overseen technological advancements but now technology was clearly in charge and everybody would pay a price. The one-time United States was now
little more than a collection of Burbclaves, where each city-state had its "own constitution, a border, laws, cops" (6). Here, there were no longer distinctions made between men and
machines; in fact, they often appeared to be one and the same and were susceptible to the same types of viruses. In fact, the novels title, Snow Crash, refers
to a catastrophic computer hardware crash that is characterized by a distorted monitor screen identical to a snowy television reception that has also found its way into the streets as
a popular recreational drug. The drug distorts mental images and particularly targets the dreaded computer hackers (a dying breed of technologically savvy PC system invaders) who are the most
proficient at binary code programming, like Da5id. The incessant emphasis on technology has resulted in collectively leaving most Americans and their foreign counterparts "brain-drained" (2). Because America was responsible
for the technological fusion, it paid the greatest price with people living in unimaginable poverty and devoid of the most basic technology such as access to the instrument that ignited
the explosion, the personal computer. That is why experienced hackers like Hiro Protagonist were in such high demand, but even a Samurai cyberpunk needed to supplement his income, so
he became a part of what was now Americas most successful business enterprise, pizza delivery. Hiro worked for Uncle Enzos, which was simply an extension of the Mafia (CosaNostrastet)
