This paper discusses these effects, but also explains the research process used to obtain the findings. It takes as its hypothesis the idea that second hand smoke increases the likelihood
of physical problems in the non-smoker. Overview of Methodology In order to successfully argue this point, its necessary to do several things. First, well define the terms we are examining,
which are the variables in the hypothesis; next, we have to make sure the variables are empirical and measurable; that is, we need to have results of experiments available that
prove the hypothesis. Next we have to make sure that the relationship among variables is logical and clear, and then, using this data, we can explain why we believe the
hypothesis is correct. The variables in this case are "second hand smoke," "physical disease" and "risk." Research The first thing well do is define the terms and make sure those
definitions are clear. Also, we need to look for unbiased sources because special interests will not give us what we need. That is, the American Cancer Society will tell us
that second hand smoke causes cancer, while the American Tobacco Institute will say that no proof exists to back up that claim. We have to try and find out what
experts are saying without relying on either side in this debate. To define the terms, its simplest to use Google. Typing in this search parameter: "definition second hand smoke" yields
265,000 hits. The first source in the list is an on-line medical dictionary, MedicineNet.com, and it appears to be unbiased. It defines second hand smoke as: "Environmental tobacco smoke that
is inhaled involuntarily or passively by someone who is not smoking" (Definition of second-hand smoke, 2006). The meaning of "physical disease" is clearly understood, but it might be useful to
