Essay / Research Paper Abstract
An 11 page paper
discussing how the policies of Stalin's successor affected the people of the former Soviet Union.
Under Khrushchev, there were several areas in which Russian citizens could expect to live longer
lives than under Stalin, but Khrushchev did not materially improve the plight of the people in
terms of any sort of freedom. Any superficial relaxation of restrictive rules was orchestrated for
the good of the party and the state; the people and their efforts were merely fuel for the party
machinery. Khrushchev's liberalization policies of destalinization changed only those conditions
that could not be sustainable. Identification of those areas was dependent on Khrushchev's
abilities of perception; while he identified several important areas, he failed to recognize the need
for reform of other areas of Russian life as well, including religion. Bibliography lists 10 sources
in 27 footnotes.
