on the United States go far beyond the initial destruction, loss of life and shock. An event like this, which overwhelmed those who saw it or were involved in it,
may cause devastating reactions that are never resolved. We expect police, fire personnel and others trained to handle emergencies to be able to cope with such things, but the extent
of the emotional, psychological and physical damage of 9/11 was beyond anything they had ever seen. This paper considers the effects of 9/11 on the first responders; i.e., those who
were first at the scene. Discussion First responders is the term given to the professionals who respond immediately to emergencies: firefighters, paramedics and the police are the people who are
usually thought of as first responders. There are others, as well; namely, the people who were on the scene when the event occurred. They may have been involved in it
or witnessed it first-hand, but in either event, they were able to render assistance to victims of the disaster. These are ordinary people without specialized training who find it within
themselves to assist others even before the professionals arrive. They are often traumatized by what theyve seen and done, something we expect. But what we do not expect is that
trained professionals may also be unable to cope with the disaster; this paper concentrates on trained firefighters and police who were still out of their depth on 9/11. In
