It could involve re-organization of the organization and mergers all which intend to make the company more competitive. Whatever techniques are used, downsizing decreases the size of the company. When
it comes to personnel, downsizing is accomplished through two primary methods. An organization lays off people or they reduce their workforce through attrition. Attrition may be the act of not
filling positions when a person leaves or an incentive approach can be used. With incentives, the business offers people who are closer to retirement a deal wherein the employee who
is retiring receives money to retire early. This is commonly referred to as a buy-out package. Downsizing through layoffs has become a common practice in organizations for more than three
decades. We have all heard broadcasts and read news reports about different companies laying off hundreds to thousands of employees. In fact, the literature has stated that millions of workers
have been laid off over these last decades. It is a practice that has become entrenched in business organizations across the world. The purpose of downsizing is to become
leaner and more competitive. It is supposed to increase the companys net profits by reducing the costs associated with labor. The literature states that downsizing refers to the actions management
takes to improve the competitiveness, the efficiency, and the productivity of their company by reducing the number of employees who work for them. In other words, downsizing is supposed
to improve the organization in numerous positive ways but does it? Does downsizing really result in all those positive outcomes organizations who are laying off people say it will? As
will be shown in the following pages, the outcomes and consequences of downsizing are debatable. This report will discuss the impacts and effects of downsizing on different factors of business.
