this paper properly! Introduction The number of Cesarean Sections is rising worldwide (Torkan et al.; Verdult 17). Non-medical reasons are one reason for this increase. Some expectant mothers want
to schedule the birth of their baby to coincide with other responsibilities. Another reason is that the average age of women giving birth is higher than in the past and
C-sections may be considered safer. As would be expected, emergency Cesarean sections are the most traumatic. It is a medical situation the parents and their families did not plan on.
In fact, the trauma associated with an emergency cesarean has been compared to post-traumatic stress disorder (Childbirth Connection). A Cesarean Section is a major surgery that takes between 45 minutes
and an hour. The baby is actually delivered in the first 5 to 15 minutes. Pre-surgery, the mother is given a general anesthetic. The surgeon makes an incision in the
abdominal wall and then in the uterus. The stomach muscles will not be cut but they will be pulled apart which will result in pain after the surgery. Then amniotic
fluid is suctioned out and the baby is delivered, head-first. The infant is passed to a nurse for evaluation. The placenta is removed and the team closes up the mother
(American Pregnancy Association). Discussion: Risks and Effects Cesarean section is not simply an alternative way of childbirth, it is a major surgery. As with any other surgical operation, there
are risks involved. There are also risks with vaginal delivery but there are more risks related to surgical procedures (Torkan et al.). For instance, there is a heightened risk of
excessive bleeding with C-sections, infection other risks (Childbirth Connection). Vaginal births also have risks such as more intense and longer-lasting pain and even nerve injuries to the infant (Childbirth Connection).
