The Millennium Development Goals resulted from the Millennium Declaration, a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2000 (Resolution adopted by the General Assembly, 2000).
The Millennium Declaration illustrates the UNs recognition of the futility of alleviating poverty and hunger through fiat or by separating political and social agendas that may be operational within the
same geographical area. It also acknowledges the inability of improving the quality of life of the worlds poorest people by focusing on one general area of need. In
short, people who do not have enough to eat cannot learn to create economic opportunity for themselves; people who cannot create economic opportunity also cannot earn enough to feed their
families and themselves. Businesses occupy a unique position to elevate living standards, but frequently disappoint and behave unethically in countries without strict labor or environmental laws.
Thus the Millennium Development Goals seek to address all primary areas affecting maintenance of poverty and misery in the world. None of the goals can
