There are a number of ways in which communication in its various forms can be seen as applicable to an organisational structure. In many ways, it is the
efficiency and validity of communication which underlies the organisational system at all levels, both internal and external. In order for such a system to function effectively, there are several ways
in which communication needs to be initiated and maintained, both for the system itself to run smoothly and for it to maintain a functional and cohesive profile to the outside
world. For example,
any organisation will establish and develop a corporate culture, and in order to do this there must be communication between both those who define the corporate culture and those who
subscribe it. Such a culture, which can be equated with a company ethos, defines that which is expected of those who make up the corporate body and demonstrates the way
in which they perceive themselves as a part of the company as a whole. Some aspects of corporate culture can be communicated in a way which is fixed and clearly
defined. For
instance, all organisations will have a set of rules, or a code of practice, which is formally laid down in written form and defines the way in which employees are
required to conduct themselves. This can cover contractual obligations with regard to attendance, punctuality, arrangements for leave, resolution of grievances, appropriate channels of communication with management, uniform requirements and so
