who are overly concerned with making their clients "comfortable" or establishing a friendly relationship are less likely to be successful than those who make the relationship strictly professional, whether there
is liking or not. But the single most important factor in the success of a counseling relationship appears to be what the client brings to it. The factors militating for
change include the clients resources and limitations as they exist within the clients reality. This is somewhat surprising, as we might expect that the relationship itself is most important in
helping a client change unwanted behaviors or resolve troubling issues. Apparently not; it is the client himself that defines the potential for success or failure in counseling. Other important factors
in the success of a counseling intervention include the clients attitude; specifically a belief that the intervention will be successful. Also important is the type of counseling model used and
the quality of the relationship. The success of the professional relationship depends in large part on the qualities that the therapist brings to it. Obviously if the clients attitude is
most important, that of the therapist is also vital. The qualities necessary in a good therapist include such things as caring, acceptance and encouragement, concern and commitment. Concern is a
sincere caring about the welfare of the client. The important word here is "sincere," because clients will sense it if the therapist is not truly interested in helping them. Such
