of educating the public student or the private student in elementary, secondary, undergraduate and/or graduate school situations, there are often times when strong leaders are needed due to a crisis
in the institution or in the community. Often times education is a chaotic process where strong and effective leadership is vital. DESCRIPTION OF THE CRISIS SITUATION AND ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
In a small rural community in southeastern Idaho, a beloved elementary school principle recently passed away after a long battle with cancer. For the purpose of this discussion, she
will be referred to as Mrs. Smith. And again, for the purpose of this discussion, the vice principle at that same school will be referred to as Mr. Jones.
The community itself is very small and very rural, having a population in total of less than 1,000 individuals and located at least 60 miles from the nearest larger community.
As is the case in many rural communities of this size, the social structure of the community revolves around their children and their childrens activities and around church attendance
and church activities. Also, due to the small population, every one knows everyone else and each individual is considered to be a member of the entire communitys extended family.
Because Mrs. Smith has been ill for an extended length of time, everyone in the community was aware that at some point she would die. Their concern was not
