focus of business education. There are innumerable texts on the matter of leadership, each with different prescriptive takes on what is required of the modern leader. However, the more prescriptive
a text is, in specific terms, the less broadly applicable it is to the practice of business as whole. This is why works that treat the topic of business leadership
philosophically are of the most utility. One excellent example of such a work is Stephen Coveys "Principle Centered Leadership". This paragraph helps the student introduce Coveys work. Covey has
a long history of conducting research on business leadership and presenting the results through the medium of books. His first work, "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" became something
of a classic among business students, because instead of prescribing specific leadership policies and behaviors, he instead described effective leadership in terms of attitudes, beliefs, and personality-related characteristics. "Principle Centered
Leadership" operates on a similar principle, advocating leadership not on the basis of rote rules and policies that would likely become outdated by the time the text reached print, but
on the basis of principles that, according to the author, are "universal and timeless" (Covey, 1992). Covey asserts that regardless of what industry or market one works in, or what
size of organization one is leading, the adopting a personality that emphasizes these principles, such as security, wisdom, and power, will effective lead to effective leadership (Covey, 1992). This
personality-centric view of leadership is similar in theme and scope to Coveys earlier works, including the seven habits. In fact, throughout the text, he repeatedly indicates how his established "seven
