times past, no employee in the United States or other Western nation would believe that employment was assured for any length of time beyond that which had just passed. Employment for life was a way of life in Japan, and of course the Japanese model eventually made its way into Western manufacturing. Employment for life is not one of the concepts of the Japanese model that has persisted, however, not even in Japan. The fact of reality is that employees and employers are not always perfect matches that never have disputes between them. If an employee is terminated or a current or former employee legally questions procedures internal to the organization, the existence of a well-written employee handbook can be critical in alleviating any litigation that the employee may bring against the company. The handbook does need to be well written, however. A poorly written one can be detrimental rather than only benign and of no help. Company Defense The employee handbook has become an important feature in employee-led litigation, for whatever reason. "Well-written Personnel policy and procedure statements reduce your companys exposure to various legal liabilities. They help in documenting, the fair and equal treatment required by federal laws while preserving a consistent level of health benefits and safety precautions to ensure a productive work force" (Fast Personnel Policies and Procedures).
