earth as well. To thwart the effects of global warming is going to take major changes, but this problem will not be solved by individuals, as it cannot be addressed as ecological problems have been in the past. For example, if every household in the U.S. bought energy-efficient light bulbs right now, the savings in greenhouse gas emissions would be canceled out by just two new coal-fired power plants-"the kind of plant that is being built in China at the rate of one a week" (Campbell 42). If everyone in North America switched to a hybrid car right now, it could only contribute a fraction of the reduction that is needed by 2050, which is when scientists agree that global CO2 emissions must be halved, which is a bare minimum target (Campbell 42). If global warming is not addressed, scientists say that potentially catastrophic climate change is inevitable. There will be many more category 4 and 5 hurricanes. Sea levels will rise as the polar ice caps continue to melt, flooding coastal cities and low-lying states, such as Florida. The warm ocean currents that currently warm Europe will shift course and that continent will be very cold. The list of repercussions goes on and on. Polls show that while people care about global warming, they do not care enough to "give up their cars or sacrifice a standard of living based on energy consumption" (Campbell 42). The answer to global warming lies in changing the economic factors governing carbon emissions. By making it more expensive to emit CO2, it makes alternative energy sources more attractive and spurs development, as well as changing engrained societal habits (Campbell 42). To seriously affect global warming, economists are saying that governments, at all levels, have to institute economic policies that are ...
