Essay / Research Paper Abstract
Nelson (2002) reports that practicing psychotherapists have moved toward an inclusive counseling model, one that takes advantage of multiple theoretical approaches to treating the spectrum of human psychological disorders in practice, or technical eclecticism, as coined by Lazarus & Beutler (1993). Relying on more than one practical approach allows greater flexibility in treating client. Under an eclectic approach, counseling modalities can be applied to simple problems while behavior interventions can be utilized for more complex problems. While this may be occurring in the practice, research on combined approaches has not yet caught up to the concept of technical eclecticism, opening the dialogue for researching combined approaches including behavioral, cognitive and more concrete factors such as genetic/medical factors. 16 References. jvPsyFtr.rtf

combined approaches has not yet caught up to the concept of technical eclecticism, opening the dialogue for researching combined approaches including behavioral, cognitive and more concrete factors such as genetic/medical
factors. While the research is lagging behind practical application, it is not nonexistent in relationship to treating both physical and psychological disorders. This
may have come from the behavior modification approach that takes utility from spiritual or metaphysical approaches related to team building and coaching technique studies. Another reason for combining theoretical approaches
comes out of failure of one approach to work on its own. When looking at successful and unsuccessful counseling outcomes a Bobevski & McLennan (1998) study proposed it was important
to consider alternative and modified interventions designed for each client individually. This multiple-answer approach is the current approach used by school districts in planning and designing educational programs for adolescents
(Schrag, 1995; Hunt, Soto, Maier & Doering, 2003). Nelson (2002) takes this one step further by pointing to a body of research used
to identify "common factors across therapies that strongly predict outcomes" (Nelson, 2002, 416). Nelson says that by identifying "psychotherapeutic working alliances [...] counselor empathy and client and counselor attitude similarity,"
the body of literature "supports a fundamental tenet of the counseling profession - that the relationship between counselor and client is the primary vehicle through which healing occurs." (Nelson, 2002,
