gasoline powered engines and specifically the burning of fossil fuels such as coals, oils, and natural gas are causing those changes. These types of activities have resulted in carbon
dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbon emissions that have accumulated in the atmosphere over time and this accumulation has negatively impacted the stratospheric ozone shield. These gases absorb heat.
The result is that heat can no longer escape from our atmosphere as effectively as it once did. This couples with clear cutting that removes trees that actually
serve to decrease atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. The result is the progressive global climate change that we refer to as global warming.
The US has a long struggle ahead in terms of convincing the world to come into step with an emission reduction program that will effectively address climate change. China
presents one of the greatest obstacles to this program. On a promising note, China has recently made some quite promising pledges in terms of aviation emissions and exempting electric
cars from taxes (Business Daily, 2011; Transport Europe, 2011). Unfortunately, aviation and electric cars are only part of the equation involving the emissions problem. Because of Chinas focus
on maintaining economic growth she will undoubtedly back down on these pledges and be continually reluctant to allow outside parties like the US and the EU to verify the emissions
reductions she does claim to make. This was the stance China took at Copenhagen and it will undoubtedly be the stance she retains in the future. The US
then must take a more assertive approach with China and we must do so by addressing the root of the problem. The following points, in particular, are critical in
