recall what they have seen and experienced. Color can have a profound effect on a variety of behaviors. For example, in a study conducted by Moore, Stammerjohan and Coulter, these researchers determined that color use in advertising can affect on "measures of attention," such as "recall and recognition," as well as on consumer attitudes (Moore, Stammerjohan and Coulter, 2005, p. 71). It is known that the brain stores color information and object information in different locations, that is, "different groups of neurons" ("Kids may," 2009, p. 17). Research suggests that the ability of the brain to connect color and shape memories develops as children age. For example, Vanessa Simmering of the University of Wisconsin at Madison conducted a study in which 28 four-year-olds and 28 five-year-olds viewed images on a computer screen for a brief period ("Kids may," 2009). Then, the children were shown a new image and asked if it was the same or different. While the four-year-olds could recognize that a new color was introduced, they did not appear to notice that two of the previous objects had simply swapped colors, as they performed than chance on the subsequent test. The five-year-olds, on the other hand, did not have this problem, which suggests that "the ability to combine the different types of visual information develops after the childs fifth year" ("Kids may," 2009, p. 17). As this illustrates, research has added enormously to understanding the effect of color on memory. Worley and Moore (2001) point out that a great deal of the research that has examined the effect of color on memory has focused on comparing the effect of black-and-white images and full-color images on recall. These researchers explain that some students are field-dependent in "making figure-ground separations, and instead tend to view images holistically" (Worley ...
