one or more of the nations at war. Wars can devastate a countrys economy. But war also enhances trade in terms of one nation selling arms to the nation at
war. What happens when a country is dependent on its trade for its survival? This is a situation that Britain has dealt with more than once. And, what of countries
that are so torn up as a result of their war, where the infrastructure has become so damaged as to preclude transportation of their goods? These are questions that cannot
be answered in any positive way. What this essay attempts to do, however, is to offer examples of how tension between two countries and outright war affects the marketing of
goods and the trading of those goods. It would seem reasonable to assume that when nations are at war with each other or
when it is clear that war is imminent, they would cease the marketing and trading of goods with each other. And, for the most part that is exactly what happens
but there have been times in history when the opposite has been true. Four months after the Great War began, The Secretary to the Committee of Imperial Defence, Sir Maurice
Hankey, to His Majestys Government that "drastic means must be taken to prevent British subjects succumbing to the temptation of continuing their trade with [the enemy] ..." (McDermott, 1997; p.
201). Trade had continued between England and Germany during the beginning of the War through circuitous means; the Home Office was involved in indirect trading with Germany through the neutral
