on the appearance of the cancer cells under the microscope. To understand the cancer and its impact on patients one can look at the effect that this has on the
body. The cancer starts at a cellular level, with the process of cell reproduction suffering interferences, with the creation of new cells when they are not needed and the
failure of old cells to die off after being damaged. This results in a build up of additional cells, which forms a tumour, which may be in the trachea, bronchi,
bronchioles or alveoli (Mazzone 4). The size of the lungs and the general symptoms of the initial stages often mean that the cancer goes undetected. With the build up
of tissues in the lungs this will have a direct impact impairing the lung functions, causing difficulties in breathing, coughing as well as pain. The coughing may often be assumed
to be a cold or bronchitis, however the cough wile remain and can become constant. This is also associated with being breathless as the capacity to the lung is inhibited,
the cough may also result in the patient coughing up phlegm with some blood in it and pain associated with the breathing.
The difficulties result from plural effusion, a build up of fluid between the outer lining of the lungs and the chest wall, which has a direct impact by limiting the
ability of the lungs to expand. The build up of fluid will usually be diagnosed once there is an accumulation of more than 500 ml (Mazzone 17). Usually be present
asymmetrically between the sides the chest, and will result in decreased movement just movement besides that is affected, as well as a diminishment of breath sounds on the affected side.
