Encyclopedia of Photography, 1984). Throughout his long life he worked in numerous different styles and his "subjects ranged from portraits and landscapes, to fashion and advertising photography, to photography of
dance and sculpture" (The Encyclopedia of Photography, 1984). The following paper looks at his life and his work. Edward Steichen Edward Steichen was born in 1879 in Luxembourg. His
family moved to the United States when he was three years old (Edward Steichen, 2005). When he was 15 he began work as an apprentice in lithography at the American
Fine Art Company in Milwaukee (Edward Steichen, 2005). It was in 1895 that he took up photography although he continued his interest and involvement in painting for the next two
decades (Edward Steichen, 2005). It was only a few years after he started into photography that he was to see his photos exhibited. It was in1899 that three paintings
under exhibition were bought by another photographer, Alfred Stieglitz (Edward Steichen, 2005). "The two men became close friends and in 1902 joined with Clarence White, Alvin Langdon Coburn, and Gertrude
Kasebier to form the Photosecession Group" (Edward Steichen, 2005). In addition, Stieglitz promoted Steichens and his work in other ways, such as through his journal titled Camera Work and through
his Little Gallery on Fifth Avenue, New York (Edward Steichen, 2005). He traveled through Europe and was apparently greatly impressed by many artist in Europe, many of whose work he
