by two people, they are each definitely in their own space and not interacting. The effect is one of loneliness, rather than companionship and is, therefore, typical of Hoppers work,
which consistently addresses the theme of loneliness and isolation (Perry). In "Room in New York," the man is seated and diligently reading a newspaper, which is propped against
a small table. Directly behind the table is a light-wood door. The centrality of the door in the painting, that is, it is centered fairly equally between the man and
woman and is a focal point, suggests that it has symbolic significance. The door is the way "out" of the relationship for either party. The woman sits perched on the
piano bench. She is turned to the side and only one hand touches the keys, so it is clear that she is not seriously playing the instrument, just plunking a
few keys. They are apparently involved in a long-term intimate relationship (Ungles). The man is wearing a black vest and a black tie over a long-sleeved shirt, with black pants.
His hair is sandy blond. The woman is dark-haired and wearing a sleeveless, long red dress. Just beyond her head is a red lampshade. The walls of the room are
bright yellow and adorned with pictures. The viewer sees the couple as if grazing through a window while walking down the street. To the left and in the foreground, the
architectural details of the building can be seen. There is a column framing the scene vertically on the left and the window ledge can be seen in the foreground.
Also, the segmented wall visible behind the column indicates the construction of the building. This gray and black framing device serves to accentuate the brightly lit interior, which looks inviting
