them the need for discipline that actually enhances rather than threatens the desire for autonomy (Watson and Watson, 2005). Decision-making is not instinctive; it is a learned behavior, which
means that children can only develop the ability to reason if they are given instructional guidelines and practical examples to follow. When behavior requiring corrective action occurs, there is
often no distinction made between punishment and discipline (Give Poor Parenting a Time-Out, 2002). Punishment "is imposed without," and often evokes behavior modifications based more on fear than on
reason (Give Poor Parenting a Time-Out, 2002, p. 12). Discipline, however, derived from the Latin term meaning, "to give life to learning," is an instructional tool that influences thought
processes that take place within (Give Poor Parenting a Time-Out, 2002, p. 12). Discipline is far superior to punishment because it accomplishes four constructive rather than destructive objectives: 1.
It shows kids what theyve done wrong; 2. It gives them ownership of the problem; 3. It gives them ways to solve the problem; and
