and then discusses the way in which it uses the educational theories of progressivism and existentialism. Discussion The film is set in the fictional Welton Academy in Vermont, an exclusive
boys prep school catering largely to the upper classes. When the movie opens, theyre about to meet a new teacher, one who will, they hope, bring some life to what
they consider a gigantic bore: English (Dead Poets Society). They get more than they bargained for when their new teacher John Keating (Robin Williams) shows up. He has them tear
a fake essay out of their English books, then says they need to take a new perspective on life; he demonstrates by climbing on top of his desk (Dead Poets
Society). A few moments later, he has them on their desks as well, looking at things from a different viewpoint. That of course is the metaphor for the whole film,
and so is Keatings motto, carpe diem, Latin for "seize the day" (Dead Poets Society). He holds classes outdoors, challenges the shy boy to speak up by bullying him until
he fights back-and wins a round of applause from his classmates, to his own amazement and pleasure (Dead Poets Society). Keating also encourages Neil Perry (Robert Sean Leonard, lately of
the TV show House), to pursue his love of acting (Dead Poets Society). The glitch is that Perrys father, an overbearing, ultraconservative martinet will hear none of this. His son
is going to go to Harvard and become a doctor-the career the elder Perry wanted for himself but never achieved (Dead Poets Society). Meantime, his son auditions for A Midsummer
