is three years long from ages 12 through 15, from which students receive a Diploma (WHED, 2008). Technical secondary school is three years long from ages 15 through 18 (WHED,
2008). There is an Upper secondary school, which is for college- bound students, it is three years and also from ages 15 through 18 (WHED, 2008). At the end of
their secondary years, students can choose to enter pre-university education, technical education and professional education (WHED, 2008). Pre-university gradates are awarded a Bachillerato (WHED, 2008). There are two levels of
technical training that result in a skilled worker or a middle-level technician (WHED, 2008). Graduates may continue on for further training at technological institutes (WHED, 2008). All of the higher
education options are public and there are several different structures. These include "universities, higher institutes, higher pedagogical institutes, centres [sic] of higher education and higher polytechnic institutes" (WHED, 2008). Higher
education is controlled directly by the Minister of Education (WHED, 2008). Students at all primary and secondary are graded by percentages with 90 - 100 being excellent while higher education
institutions use a 2-5 scoring system with 5 being high (WHED, 2008). Barbados has one of the highest literacy rate in the world, about 98 percent (Barbados.org, 2009). They have
primary and secondary public education and they begin children at an earlier age, 4 years old (Barbados.org, 2009). This stage continues until age 11 at which time, children must take
