This 5 page paper comments on six articles about education, although the focus of each article is different. The articles discuss: the trend towards for-profit educational institutions; companies needing to become ecumenical for success; allegations from corporate executives that poor education was leading to a loss of global competitiveness, an allegation that had to be adjusted in the 1990s; projects supported by IBM in one school district and how they did not achieve their goals; the story of a teacher who did not want to be a teacher but had limited choices as a girl because of her color; and finally, the story of a teacher in a low-income predominately black community and how she assures success. has systemic problems. Despite valorous attempts to reform the system, it is still in a state of disarray. Walsh (1999) is alluding to this when he discusses the privatization of education and points out that private education is a huge business. For instance, revenue in for-profit education companies realized $82 billion in revenue in 1998 (Walsh, 1999). The success of Charter schools only lends support to the premise of a coming trend of for-profit education because about ten percent of these publicly funded schools are managed by for-profit companies (Walsh, 1999). Merrill Lynch, among others see a strong trend in this market (Walsh, 1999). Reich provides a different view of the global economy, one that he calls ecumenical, that is, the companies participating are ecumenical (DATE). This means that companies will no longer be called "an American company" or "a Japanese company" as examples. The talent and skill for any product will come from numerous sources (Reich, DATE). Classifications of jobs that have carried on since the 1800s is no longer appropriate (Reich, DATE). By default, then, education programs preparing individuals to enter the work world must change to a point where specific content is less important than are the attitudes and social interaction skills needed (Reich, DATE). Reich places great emphasis on symbolic analysis and argues that America trains its symbolic analysts better than any other country (Reich, DATE). Nonetheless, Reich points out that the present system has changed little since the middle of the 20th century (Reich, DATE). This results in American youth not being prepared as well as they need to be for the 21st century (Reich, DATE).
