taking a hard look at my own educational values, Ive come to the decision that I have more of an epistemological look at education. My educational philosophy is that not all students think alike, therefore, teachers should try to teach lessons utilizing as many methods as possible. In regards to epistemology, I feel it closely resembles my values in teaching because the concepts appeal to the broader sense of things. What works for one person does not work for another is my educational philosophy, but that does not mean students shouldnt understand how the other way of thinking works. I feel like epistemology understands this way of thinking because of the knowledge of how and the knowledge of that. A person needs to know not only the concept behind doing something, but how to actually do it. For example, a child learning to read may understand the concept of reading after learning to identify letters, but without actually learning how to read the child will be lost in future education. Over time, the child may learn how to pick up the "how" of education over being satisfied with knowing only "that" is what is done (Cheng, Chan, Tang, & Cheng, 2008). Karabenick and Moosa (2005) looked at various studies comparing students in other countries to students in the United States. While those studies focused on how the students understood science, they did find one piece of evidence that applies to studying English. The students in all countries could not say if their knowledge was more from evidence or their own opinions (Karabenick & Moosa, 2005, p.376).
