to be an EFL instructor because I enjoyed experiencing the satisfaction on the students face when they understood something I taught. I felt that as long as I implemented
strategies for learning that were effective for the greatest number of students in that class, I was succeeding for the most part and this was my desired goal. Without
a teaching philosophy, though, I had no idea how applying what I knew about instructing could integrate information that would better serve a varied learner population or reflect the goal
of lifelong learning. My current course of study has had a significant impact on my views as a teacher, resulting in the development of an active teaching philosophy. One
of the major components of this philosophy is my view that there is no ideal or perfect method that should be followed in all situations. In correlation, there is
also no single method that works with every learner population. Instead, educators must consider a variety of factors in determining the best approach to working with a particular population.
In each case, though, methods of instruction should reflect an understanding of cultural diversity, the application of cultural sensitivity and the demonstration of respect for all students, regardless of
their place of origin or starting language capabilities. Multiculturalism is a component of my educational philosophy because it underscores the value placed on different cultures and support for a
kind of worldview in education (Suleiman, 1998). The multicultural perspective enhances learning in second language programs because it supports the ideal of a worldview while also enhancing learning of
