Perry Glasser (1997) recalled the comments of a hard-working single mother in his first year of teaching in 1969, at a time when lectures were "rap sessions"
and subject matter was thought to need to be "relevant" to students lives. The janitorial worker asked, "To get your job, you have to read Shakespeare, am I right?
The hard stuff. Am I right? ... So what I wants to know is just why the school keeps sending my daughter home with all this crap ... She knows

to assessment seems to be useful in cases in which educators and parents appear to be at odds over students experiences in class or the subject matter explored. The
contents of the student portfolio can aid in bringing focus back to the student, where it belongs. Years ago, demographic estimations concluded that
by 2000, minority students would account for a third of all US school students, but that only 5 percent of their teachers would be minority members as well (Urban Education,
1995). It has been demonstrated that more ethnically sensitive teachers can better understand a diverse classroom population. Activity
