formal education. Of course, that is understandable, because while traveling the treacherous roadways there was much misfortune and stress. Formal education could not occur until the people were settled at
their destination. Up until that time, education in the United States was somewhat haphazard anyway. For example, it was not until 1852 that any state--Massachusetts was the first--would enact
a law to make education compulsory (Miller & Faux, 1997). In 1860, for instance, more than 90% (1997, p.316) of black people were illiterate. While they were slaves, it still
denotes a problem in a variety of communities around the nation at the time. In any event, it is true that the children of the Oregon Trail did have
to wait for formal education. It seems that in part, many children were so busy with chores and travel that school had to be set aside during their journeys. While
this is true, it is also true that the children did receive some sort of education. The typical day would begin with breakfast, packing, and preparing for the evening ("Life
and Death," 2003). While the men took care of the animals, the women cooked and evening activities included schooling among other things (2003). While not formal, the education was something
for the children to hang onto. Obviously, the reason why formal education could not be initiated was that travel took up almost the entire day. Another reason why formal schooling
was not implemented is likely because of the emotional toll that travel took on the families. Education was the last thing on the minds of the people who were trying
