The crack kid myth asserts that children born to mothers who have used crack cocaine during their pregnancy will suffer from significant behavioural problems which are not found in children
from similar backgrounds whose mothers are not substance abusers. This theory was put forward by Chasnoffs research in the late 1980s, which stated that crack children were more aggressive than
others and had less self-control. It was this study which led to the police and judicial war on drugs, in the course of which women were subject to criminal charges
if they used drugs during pregnancy.
However, other studies have found that crack is far less likely to contribute to behavioural problems than other factors such as poverty and dysfunctional family backgrounds. A
study at the University of Florida by Eyler and Behnke found that whist disadvantaged children showed a higher than normal incidence of behavioural problems compared with children from more privileged
backgrounds, there was no significant difference between those who had been exposed to crack in utero and those who had not.
Since the survey was conducted using material submitted by the childrens family members or caregivers, there
was some concern that the results might be influenced by subjectivity: however, another conducted on rats would seem to bear out Eyler and Behnkes results. Rats which had been exposed
to cocaine before birth demonstrated some loss of attention compared to those which had not, but there were no differences in social behaviour or memory capacity.
