Updating, and keeping up with the times--inclusive of the riddance of the 9 to 5 work day--is something unfathomable to the educational system that does not want to change. It is therefore no wonder that academia looks down upon mass media, something that has seemingly taken the liberty to educate the youth and the people with new shows and new points of view. It is no longer the teacher teaching the culture, but mass media. This new phenomenon, in part prompted by technology, has affected education, its organization, content and philosophy. It has shaken the sensibilities of teachers, so much so that there is a vehement and antagonistic relationship between education as it is known and mass media. Does mass media and education have, as claimed by Gustavo Villamizar (1997) "irreconcilable and contradictory dynamics." He goes on to say that "the school does not hold hegemony over education, and the media are not the annihilators of the school system." Indeed, one does wonder why there has to be antagonism and why the two cannot coincide in a peaceful, complimentary relationship. To some extent, purpose enters the picture, and to this end, Villamizar (1997) suggests that mass media is more interested in entertainment while education has the goal of creating good citizens. To some extent, this is true. At the same time, media does claim to want to give out credible information and that information is a large part of their goal, not entertainment.
