rationale of infection control in the institutional setting. The Organization The setting is a nursing
home, a long term care facility where the medical focus is geriatrics. It is a 60-bed facility offering skilled nursing and intermediate care for the long term residents.
The volume of activity is high, for all the residents of the facility need assistance with daily self-care routines; some are unable to perform these tasks for themselves. The
activities involved in caring for residents include bathing, toileting, meals, therapies and social activities. Staff provides an interface with residents families to address
any concerns that family members may have, and also provide the physician interface. This includes managing medications and charts; attending during physician visits; and providing other physician-related services for
the benefit of residents. These other services include fielding phone calls from various physicians and other facilities; making appointments and arranging transportation; and ensuring that physician orders for residents
are met and followed. Beyond these duties are the operational and administrative duties required in this type of facility. The staff deals
with the issues of housekeeping, laundry and maintenance, while also ensuring that the facility and staff meet all state and federal regulatory requirements.
