differently: "They talk about educating the whole child, teaching children to explore, to become discovery learners, to become lifelong learners, learn to learn, learn how to get along in a
mosaic society, how to get along and cooperate with a group, . . ." (2001). Flury also alleges that Canadian educators promote to children there is no right or
wrong and they need to learn to become nonjudgmental if they are to become good citizens as children, adolescents and as adults (2001). It seems as if education and
the community are at cross purposes in terms of what they expect from the education system. It seems that everyone is telling the schools what they should be promoting in
the classroom, what their goals are supposed to be and what the outcomes for the children and adolescents are supposed to be. Educators face expectations that they cannot meet.
When we then ask whether education enlightens or fosters social control, we add an even more complex issue to the mix. Broeckx approaches the question from the other end of
the spectrum. Broeckx begins with a brief description of the average, ordinary Canadian citizen in these terms: "They are good people, but they are also a deceived and abused people"
