improve literacy and restructure the way in which literacy is approached. Utilizing the four-prong format of 1) guided reading, 2) self-selected reading, 3)
writing and 4) working with words, Four-Blocks is broken down into three separate segments that concentrate on specific age groups: Kindergarten, grades 1-3 and grades 4-8. The first block
- guided reading - has the teacher choosing material that includes giving a reason for making this particular choice and showing students which reading strategies are apropos for that selection,
which is done in a combination of partners, groups and the whole class. Gaining comprehension is the focal point of this block, inasmuch as students dissect the book in
order to understand how a story is assembled: plot, setting, characters, etc. (Cunningham, 2005). Reaching and teaching all students in todays troubled academic
climate - no matter their (in)capacity to learn - has presented quite a challenge for educators who are often faced with the responsibility of instructing many different types of students
within a single classroom. Various methods have been introduced as a means by which to address a system whereby at-risk students fall through the cracks because of not being
taught in a way they understand, however, not all have demonstrated a true ability to overcome the struggle. Drs. Dorothy Hall and Patricia Cunningham recognize how all children do
not learn alike and therefore require "substantial instruction to support the learning personalities of all students" (Hall et al, 2001), which is why they developed the Four-Blocks Literacy Model.
