On the other hand, those with a negative attitude or no knowledge of multicultural education would have low expectations for minority students. The authors supported these opinions with research citations.
The study was important because, as the authors point out, the population of students is becoming evermore diverse. To support this statement, Pettus and Allain report that in 1976, about
24 percent of all students attending Americas public schools were identified as non-white. That number is expected to soar to 46 percent by 2020. This forecast is made based on
migration data. Furthermore, there is an ever-increasing proportion of students who live below the poverty line and there is another dramatic increase in the numbers of children who speak little
or no English. Given the changing demographics of the public school population, it is essential that teachers hold positive attitudes as well as some understanding of their students needs. The
authors support this statement by citing other investigators who found that "pre-service teachers who are not trained in multicultural education have low expectations for minority students" (Pettus and Allain, 1999).
The study took place at James Madison University. More specifically, the questionnaire the investigators designed was administered to 62 students enrolled in the programs four-week multicultural education course. The
questionnaire was used as a pre- and post-test to determine if the course changed attitudes. The authors provide an adequate introduction that tells the reader immediately what the purpose
