A great deal has been written about multicultural education and education and multiculturalism over the last three decades or longer. Controversies and debates have raged. The articles reviewed reflect
yet more opinions. It is Schlesinger, however, who says something different (336). Schlesinger asks why people of European descent who founded this nation feel guilty about the American culture (336).
He also asks why schools should focus on educating 20 percent of the student population from non-European backgrounds at the expense of the 80 percent who do represent European ancestry
(338). Almost 80 percent of colleges he surveyed do not require a course in the history of Western Civilization but some require a course in third-world or ethnic studies (338).
This does not make a lot of sense, particularly when you consider another fact Schlesinger brings out, immigrants hate Western culture but they want the benefits of it. Schlesinger ends
with a comment that we should all take heed of - the task is to appreciate the diversity of the country but we must also stress the Western ideas that
unified the nation in the first place (342 Peggy McIntosh writes about the invisible systems that give white males greater privilege in society. She comes up with a list of
26 items, some of which are valid, a few of which are a stretch (McIntosh) The point that she makes that ties in with the other authors reviewed here is
that it is important to be aware of the things Whites take for granted but that those of other races or ethnicities might not have access to (McIntosh The
