determined to gain more education and more understanding. She comes from a very rough and common world, and enters into a world that teaches her about culture and many other things. We see her character develop strongly as her speech changes and her perceptions change. Many may well argue that Rita becomes something of a monster, leaving her common sense and good nature behind her as she becomes educated. But, while there have been moments where that seemed to be happening, throughout it all Rita does not become a monster but rather becomes a wise and intelligent woman. In the following paper we examine how Rita develops, illustrating that she could have, but is not, a monster in the end. The second half of the paper examines the importance of the characters of Denny and Julia as it relates to the development of Rita. Frank and Rita In better understanding what type of person Rita becomes it is important to examine the relationship between Frank and Rita as well as character of Frank himself as a teacher. The first thing we note when watching or reading this play is how different the two individuals are. We note that Frank is clearly from an upper class portion of society whereas Rita is from the lower class dredges of society. Their language is one of the most obvious differences and we first take note of Franks social position and language when talking on the phone to a person we assume is his wife. "Darling, you could incinerate ratatouille and still it wouldnt burn...What do you mean am I determined to go to pub? I dont need determination to get me into a pub" (Russell).
