as different cultures require different types of instruction. At least, certain customs, traditions and attitudes permeate some cultures and assimilating into American schools can be difficult. Inoue (1999) points out
that Asian ESL students for example have greater difficulty learning in American schools than do other ESL students. This point, along with a great deal of research makes the case
that Asian students do sometimes require a second look. If for some reason they are not doing as well in learning institutions, something needs to be done. To examine the
issue with greater precision, the group to be studied is specifically Chinese students who are in higher education institutions. Sun, W. & Chen, G. (1997) looked at mainland Chinese students
adapting at an American university. Problems are found in terms of cultural awareness and a language barrier is discovered as well (1997). Difficulties in terms of academic achievement was also
noted (1997). Lin (2002) examines the plight of Chinese graduate students in American classrooms, particularly as it respects social sciences. It seems that the Chinese students embrace a
different learning style and so the American way of teaching to some extent has hindered the learning process. This study provides some semblance of the reason for the problem, which
is a culture conflict. In order to understand and help Chinese students learn, one has to be cognizant of specific differences in Chinese and American culture. In this realm, it
seems that communication is key, including but not limited to, language. Xia (2000) focuses on the culture of Chinese students and the problems they have with the instructor centered speaking
paradigm. Primarily, the difficulty is in terms of cultural differences. Instructors need not be polite for example or engage in discussions (2000). There is the sense that the instructor is
