and a book which presents us with a myriad of possibilities for examination and explicating. In the following paper we discuss the development of the character of Edna, illustrating how
she is truly awakened to her identity and finds this awakening far too painful to bear in the end. Edna In the beginning of this novel we see Edna
and her family take a vacation. At this point she has not been awakened, by any means, to who she is, what she is missing, and what she truly wants
from life. She is simply a wife and mother, having no real strong traits, likes or dislikes it would seem. She is a woman who seems content with her position
in life, for the most part, for she does not question it nor does she distress at her lack of freedom for she does not see that she has needed
such a break. One day she realizes: "Her marriage to Leonce Pontellier was purely an accident, in this respect resembling many other marriages which masquerade as the decrees of Fate"
(Chopin Chapter VII). She then meets Robert and her life takes a powerful turn. Not only does she engage in a very passionate affair with Robert, with whom she
falls in love, but she begins to branch out and experience life on her own terms, focusing on her own desires. She learns to swim, she takes up painting once
again, and she begins to listen, actively, to passionate music. She begins to awaken, feeling alive and seeing the world around her. She has essentially opened up a door and
