meant to depict Queen Elizabeth herself, and thus to pay tribute to her memory. This is an Arthurian tale, and it is Arthur who is the main hero of
the book. In this way, he lends his guidance to the individual heroes of each chapter. In the end, he and Gloriana (The Faerie Queen) are united.
The character of Belphoebe is that of a chaste huntress. Interestingly, Queen Elizabeth is this character as well. The third
book is the book of Chastity, and features the rescue of Amoret from the House of Busirane. Here Belphoebe, resembling the virgin huntress Diana, is a mirror of the
"rare chastitee" of Queen Elizabeth. In this way, Belphoebe finds herself worshipped and admired by Arthurs squire Timias. Later in the story however, Belphoebe and Timias will be
banished from one another. Belphoebe and the mirror are related in a number of ways. The mirror is responsible for
prophesies in this story, such as when Britomart tells of how she fell in love with Arthegall after seeing him in a magic mirror. The relationship then between
the mirror and Belphoebe lies in their joint abilities to assist the characters in this story on the path toward their future. Both the mirror and Belphoebe have the
responsibility to help other characters and thus be an instrument in their development. Belphoebe clearly assists Timias when he was wounded by a forester who ended up wounding him.
Belphoebe, with the help of Timias, also work to rescue Amoret from Lust. In book six, the main action is centered
