American Freedom (1975) won the Society of American Historians Francis Parkman, the Southern Historical Associations Charles S. Sydnor Prize and the American Historical Associations Albert J. Beveridge Award.ii In this
text, which is one of the most "celebrated books in recent American historiography," Morgan explores the connections between "slavery, freedom, persistent inequality and American egalitarianism."iii Morgans main premise is
that American racism developed principally as a response to socioeconomic forces, rather than from "irrational psychosexual" motivation.iv As this thesis suggests, this book examines the dichotomy of early American history,
which is that a love for liberty and equality grew in the American colonies simultaneously with a reliance on the institution of slavery, which is the antithesis of these principles.
In examining this relationship, Morgan concentrates on Virginia, as the largest slave-owning colony, but he actually begins his analysis before the founding of the English colonies, describing the English
ambition to bring the benefits of freedom to the world. Richard Hakluyt, for example, urged his fellow countrymen to bring the "blessings of English rule overseas."v An influence on Sir
Walter Raleigh, Morgan indicates how Hakluyt and Raleigh envisioned English colonies as becoming a rallying point for those in the New World oppressed under Spanish rule.vi Morgan goes on
to describe the experiences of the early colonizing efforts. This description includes social, political and economic factors, which paint a vivid portrait of the difficult of this new life. Generally
speaking, Europeans died within five years of coming to the New World. The subsequent labor shortage was severe and plantation owners, as well as other settlers, turned to indentured servants
