figure in the world of mathematics. The following paper examines his life and work. Edmond Halley: Life and Works Edmond Halley
was "born in London in 1656" (Edmund Halley: 1656 - 1742). Edmonds father, also Edmond Halley, "was a wealthy soap-maker in London at a time when the use of soap
was spreading throughout Europe" (OConnor; Robertson). However, he lost most of his fortune in the great fire in London when Edmond the son was ten years old (OConnor; Robertson). However,
he was still able to afford a good education for his son, privately having him tutored and then sending him to St Pauls School (OConnor; Robertson). It was at this
particular school that he would demonstrate his keen mind: "... equally distinguished in classics and mathematics, [he] rose to be captain of the school at fifteen, constructed dials, observed the
change in the variation of the compass, and studied the heavens so closely that it was remarked by Moxon the globe maker that if a star were displaced in the
globe he would presently find it out" (OConnor; Robertson). Halley then attended Queens College Oxford (Edmund Halley: 1656 - 1742). He
was 17 at the time and apparently already considered to be an expert on astronomy (OConnor; Robertson). At around that time he began to work with Flamsteed who was the
Astronomer Royal, helping assist him with various observations at Greenwich and Oxford (OConnor; Robertson). It was while at Oxford that he made
