While the majority of the evidence indicates that she did indeed run the country and make important decisions independent of outside counsel, the question is was she qualified to do so? Clearly this is an issue of controversy - both then and now. There were those who were outraged at learning about Ediths role in government, while others admired her sense of dedication. Today, with the advantages of hindsight, the question is still posed as to the effectiveness of her reign. Was she truly prepared for the responsibilities that she undertook? What qualifications did she have? Did she have the administrative skills necessary to make presidential decisions? These are important questions, considering the influence she had upon national, and even world, politics. Biography of Edith Wilson Edith Wilson was often referred to as the "secret president" and the "first woman to run the government" (Edith Bolling Galt Wilson, 2003). In fact, the press came to call Edith Wilson the "Acting First Man" and "The Presidentress" as well (Edith Wilson: Petticoat Presidency? 2003). Edith Wilson was a woman who had grown up in a happy home, with protective parents who adored her (Edith Bolling Galt Wilson, 2003). Her family was from Wytheville, Virginia, and Edith was seventh among eleven children (Edith Bolling Galt Wilson, 2003).
