The following examination of the first two episodes of Reitzs eleven-part series focuses on the various themes that Reitz establishes early on in the series, both from a narrative standpoint and also through superb use of cinematography and poetic imagery. The principal and underlying theme of the series is indicated in its title. The opening shot shows a boulder on which is carved "Made In Germany" (in English). The title of "Heimat" is superimposed in large letters over this insignia. With this insignia, Reitz appears to be announcing to an international audience that this narrative will present a uniquely German perspective on twentieth century history and the forces that brought on World War II. Reitz indicated in an interview that "Heimat" is a word that complex cultural connotations for Germans. He said that evoked in him a "feeling of something lost or very far away," which the closer one gets to it, the most elusive it becomes (Kaes 163). In other words, the cultural connotation for "Heimat" goes beyond simply "homeland," as it connotes images of security, warmth, hearth and home, but in a mythical way that remains difficult to obtain and hold on to. The first episodes of the series begin the process of establishing "heimat" as a poetic ideal, defining it in terms of scenes from provincial village life. The first scene starts with a long shot of a meadow, over which there is superimposed the precise date, "May 9, 1919, a Friday."
