works. The following paper examines his life and work, arguing that Poe was a disturbed individual who wrote about things he feared and images that haunted him. Edgar
Allen Poe: Life Related to Works First off there are many who simply assume that Edgar Allen Poe was an alcoholic and that his father was an alcoholic as well.
This would not necessarily have been something that would lead an individual to be disturbed in a manner that would be revealed through horrific tales. But, what has been strongly
argued is that Poe was not an alcoholic, but rather he had a condition wherein he was allergic to alcohol and thus alcohol truly acted as a drug for him.
"Poe was a dipsomaniac, not an alcoholic. Alcohol was a drug that acted compulsively on him" and just one drink would completely alter his personality (Poulter). This is important
to understand because Poes world was a world of drinking as a social reality and because he did not react to alcohol in the same way as other people, thereby
increasing his sense of dysfunction. He would often turned to it in times of stress and depression and Poe would likely feel his insecurities to such a degree that he
truly was aided in his disturbing qualities through drinking. His, perhaps even delusional, perspectives were seen in some of his works, especially "The Black Cat." In "The Black Cat"
we have a man who is a drinker and a man who is seeing things that are not happening. It is a slow progression to murder and madness because of
