action is seen completely through the eyes of a nameless boyhood friend of Roderick Usher. The reader must trust that the narrator is of sound mind and that his
impressions of the eerie house of Usher and its inhabitants are accurate. The narrator immediately conveys the storys dark tone as he describes his journey to the Usher house: "I
had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country, and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on, within the view of
the melancholy House of Usher" (Poe 21). Poe also drops some suggestive clues while describing the houses foreboding exterior -- "vacant eye-like windows," "white trunks of decayed trees,"
"the hideous dropping off of the veil. There was an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart" (Poe 21). What was the cause of these unsettling
feelings, the narrator wonders aloud? Poes action is always suggestive rather than based upon concrete facts. He provides the reader clues that there is an essence of death
which surrounds the house and implies that within there is a terrible secret by employing such adjectives as decayed and veil. Once inside the house, the narrator notes
the "ebon blackness of the floors, and the phantasmagoric armorial trophies" (Poe 24). This seems to indicate a dark illusion that the house and its residents are perpetuating. The
only two occupants of the house are a brother and sister, Roderick and Madeline Usher. The solitary Roderick seems to be suffering from some debilitating but undefined mental disorder.
The narrator is visiting the house in an attempt to cheer Roderick and restore his failing spirits. He is immediately struck by "a cadaverousness of complexion... ghastly pallor"
